Best Face Search Tools: AI Reverse Image Search and More

Best Face Search Tools: AI Reverse Image Search and More

As someone who has huge folders of photos and other images going back decades, I once struggled to find a reliable reverse image search tool, especially for faces.

Scrolling through my unordered albums, I’d be asking, who is this person? Did I take this photo or who owns the rights? Where did I publish this image and should I reuse it?

Fortunately, with the rise of AI, there’s no shortage of face search technology and reverse image search engines. Having tested dozens of solutions, I narrowed down 10 tools that can accurately match images, find pages they are published on, and let you explore similar shots.

This is particularly useful for privacy or copyright concerns, or for identifying who may be in a photo when you don’t know its origin.

The following 10 tools all perform well but excel in different areas. Let’s take a closer look at what makes them stand out:

1. PimEyes – Best Face Search Engine

Best Face Search Tools: AI Reverse Image Search and More

PimEyes is my current go-to face search engine due to its high level of accuracy and large datasets.

You upload a photo with a face, then PimEyes analyses its features and compares it to a huge database of billions of indexed images from publicly crawlable websites.

Initial results return exact matches and once these are exhausted, you get modified and similar images with the same person. You can sort them by date to find the latest instances or the very first source. You can also isolate results from individual sites.

PimEyes positions itself as a tool for people to find their own photos online, monitor their digital presence, and protect their privacy, but it can also help search other people and general image sourcing.

Free users can see a summary of the results with a few unlockable sources, so you can click through and view the URL.

Paid users get full access to all the results and source URLs, can set up alerts to notify you when there are new results for images, and generate reports.

Overall, PimEyes offers the deepest search results for faces on the web, but other tools have different features worth considering.

2. Lenso.ai – Best AI Reverse Image Search with Facial Recognition Engine

Lenso.AI AI reverse image search

Lenso.AI is one of the best all-round AI reverse image search tools, offering powerful facial recognition, but also the ability to find places, duplicates, related, and similar images.

It’s incredibly easy and effective – simply go to the site and drag-and-drop your image or use the Chrome Extension.

Initial results combine each category, or you can filter them. E.g., to find instances of the exact same image being used, click duplicates. This applies to faces/people and places.

I found that clicking related images effectively retrieves images that feature the same person. Whereas similar images are contextually similar but not necessarily the same person. For example, with an image of a sports star, you will get images of other sports stars striking the same pose.

I like that you can see the source URLs and filter results based on date and the quality of the match.

Overall, Lenso.AI offers a comprehensive and highly accurate solution for copyright related searches and privacy, finding a person or place, or simply exploring the images you like.

The tool can be used for free, with monthly and yearly plans to fully unlock sources and the ability to set up alerts for new results. You also get Research Mode with the Professional plan, which provides up to 10 times the number of results and advanced filters, such as domain, size, language, date range, and others.

Moreover, the Developer plan comes with API support, so you can integrate Lenso’s reverse image search technology into your own apps or workflow. This includes 5,000 API calls a month, custom requests, and tracking.

3. TinEye – The Original Reverse Image Search Engine

TinEye reverse image search engine

We can’t make a list of best reverse image search tools without mentioning TinEye, the one that started them all. Before AI, TinEye pioneered image fingerprinting, where an image’s visual patterns, like edges and shapes where assigned a unique digital signature, then matched against its database.

Today the site and browser extensions still use its proprietary image recognition technology for finding exact copies of images and modified versions, and where they are published on the web.

While it doesn’t have a distinct facial recognition feature, it is still highly accurate in matching photos of people.

I find TinEye to be particularly useful for tracking how an image has been used online, as it aims to find the very first source of publication and you can see how it was spread chronologically.

Moreover, it now has a mobile reverse image search feature, where you can take a photo of an object, like a magazine cover, and see if it has been digitized.

The service is privacy focused and doesn’t store any images you upload for matching. It’s also free to start, although for unlimited reverse image searches and advanced features like bulk scanning and API access, you’ll need a Pro account.

4. Eyematch.AI – Best AI Facial Recognition

EyeMatch.AI best face search and AI facial recogntion

If you want to focus purely on face searching, then Eyematch.AI is a top choice. The free web tool lets you upload a photo and the AI will analyze facial features for precise matches or very similar versions of the original image.

The AI can take a minute or so to complete its analysis, but you get a progress bar and previews of the images it’s already finding. This way you’ll know quickly if there are matches.

In my testing, the results were very accurate, returning dozens of instances of websites using the same celebrity photo. The only time you will get results for similar photos or people that look like the original image, is when the original isn’t published anywhere.

Along with the images, you also get the source URLs for continuing your investigation.

Eyematch.AI is a straightforward process and one of the best solutions for tracking where an image appears online, spotting unauthorized use, and protecting privacy. What’s more, it’s one of the few free services that provides quality results.

5. FaceCheck.ID – Best for Altered or Disguised Photos

Best Face Search for Altered Photos

FaceCheck ID is a modern and popular face search tool focused on finding where a person’s face appears online. Its AI technology can find exact matches for uploaded photos, as well as other images that contain the same person.

It scans virtually anywhere images are publicly available online, such as social media profiles, news sites, blogs, and even videos.

This makes it a valuable tool for identifying unknown individuals, verifying identities, and checking how your own photos are being used on the web.

In my testing, it provided solid results for faces that have a moderate to large digital footprint. As is the nature with all these tools, results become less accurate when there isn’t much to find in the first place.

To give you an idea, it assigns a score out of 100 for how closely a face is matched.

One area it excels at is identifying faces in images that have been altered or disguised in some way from the original.

FaceCheck ID works on a freemium credits system, allowing you to try limited searches for free, but most detailed results with direct links to sources require paid credits. The site is easy to use, although there can be a queue at peak times.

Developers can also access the API for integrating the facial search functionality into their own apps or systems.

6. Pic Detective – Best Free Face Search Tool

Best Face Search tool for free

Most of the leading face search engines come with the catch of requiring payment for full access. If you don’t have the budget, Pic Detective is a completely free alternative.

It’s a surprisingly feature-rich solution, allowing you to upload an image and view results in seconds. These can be filtered by exact matches, useful for finding where an image is being used, or similar, which can help identify a person in a photo or explore their other images.

The only limiting factor is that you get approximately 50 results. However, this is more than enough if you are not exhaustively logging every single instance of an image.

What is good to see is that you can view and open the source URLs without payment.

Other features include the ability to filter based on image size and source URL. I.e., only showing results from Facebook.

I also like that you can enter the URL to an image for searching rather than having to upload it.

Despite being free and not even requiring an account, Pic Detective automatically deletes uploaded photos once results have been delivered, so there’s no storing of your image data.

7.  ProFaceFinder – Best for Finding your Photos Online

ProFaceFinder

ProFaceFinder is an AI-powered reverse image search tool launched in 2022 that specializes in facial recognition.

It scans faces across the open web, including dating sites, social media, and other public databases, to help users identify catfish, scammers, or unknown individuals. It also focusses on your privacy, helping locate where your own photos may be being used inappropriately.

In my testing, I found matches to be very accurate, accounting for hairstyle changes, beards, and age progression. Furthermore, each result comes with a score based on visual similarity. This is useful when finding images that have been altered to hide that they have been stolen.

Any photos you upload are deleted shortly afterwards, so you do not have to worry about your own face being used in any database or AI training. There is also an opt-out request form if your photo has already been indexed because others have used it without permission.

Alongside the main website that lets you drag-and-drop photos for searching, it offers a Chrome extension for quicker searches while browsing.

As well as faces, it can also identify locations, objects, and brands, based on similarities.

ProFaceFinder is completely free to make basic searches, but you can upgrade to a paid plan to unlock full sources and match data.

8. SurfFace – Best for Social Media Face Searching

SurfFace face verifier

SurfFace is an AI facial recognition tool aimed at identifying and verifying someone in an image.

To do that, its AI maps the facial features and compares the profile to a database of more than 10 billion images.

Unlike a lot of face search tools, you can upload up to 5 images at the same time to help improve accuracy.

It stands out the most due to its database of over 10 million social media profiles, which allows you to quickly locate old friends, identify unknown people, and discover if someone else is using your identity.

The results include both duplicates and images where the same person appears. In testing, this was very accurate and did not return many false or similar looking people. However, it did pick up when an image had been digitally altered.

You also get the web URLs and other info for deeper investigation and there are a good range of filters to narrow things down.

It’s often described as a combined face search engine and people finder, combining reverse image search with open-source intelligence to give you clues about the identity connected to an image.

The main downside is the free version is very limited, and you’ll be prompted to upgrade after only a few searches.

9. Face Check AI – Best Android App

Face Check AI Android app

While the majority of the tools I tested work fine on mobile, you may prefer a dedicated mobile app. On Android, Face Check AI is a great app for finding photo matches and identifying people.

I like that you can upload a photo but also take a selfie or photo directly in the app. This is then cross referenced with public sites and databases, returning duplicates and similar images, along with the source URLs. You can then open these in your mobile browser.

Another notable feature is Deep Search. Simply tap on one of the results and it will give the name of the person (more common with celebrities or those with digital footprints), more info about the source URL, and a list of related topics.

Users get a handful of free searches before needing to upgrade to the premium app. If you don’t upgrade, you can still conduct a search, but the results are hidden. Nonethetheless, it’s useful to know that results exist before making payment.

Overall, the app works well out of the box, but there are lots of settings and filters for tweaking things to your liking.

FaceSeek AI face search

Finally, honorable mention goes to FaceSeek. It follows a similar process to the other tools I reviewed. Upload an image on the site, the AI analyzes the unique facial features, and it returns precise and very similar matches from across the web.

A single image will return dozens of verified results, which you can scroll through with ease.

However, where it really stands out is the ability to detect a face when it has been used in a video. My test image was found in multiple videos on TikTok, YouTube, and Instagram, each showing a still image of where it appears in the clip.

Users can carry out a face search for free and see a snippet of match sources. However, to view and open the full URL and carry out deeper searches, you’ll need to purchase a plan or credits.

Overall, FaceSeek is a simple and effective face search tool, though it doesn’t come with any extra search features like general reverse image search.

Nonetheless, there are few extra AI features, such as the ability to turn images into short, animated videos. While this might be fun, it does call into question how it stores uploaded images.

Conclusion

In the end, the best face search tool depends on what you need it for. If you’re looking for deep, AI-powered facial matching across the public web, freemium platforms like PimEyes, EyeMatch.AI, and FaceCheck.ID, are leading the pack.

If you want to move beyond facial recognition into general reverse image searching, newer tools like Lenso.AI and traditional tools like TinEye are equally reliable at matching all types of images.

Those on a budget might choose a slightly scaled-back but completely free solution like Pic Detective.

Meanwhile, if you want a mobile app, Face Check AI is worth considering.
